The Basics of Texas Holdem Poker

Texas Holdem poker is an easy game to learn how to play, but to become a master takes time to learn about the game practice playing. Texas Holdem poker is played by up to 10 players at a time with a dealer who doesn’t play along. It changes a little when you play in a home game where every player would be the dealer in turn.

In a Texas Holdem poker game each player would be dealt two pocket or hole cards dealt face down. These cards are only be viewed by the player. You can then use your two cards in combination with the community cards dealt in the middle of the table. The combination of your cards and the five community cards then needs to make up a 5-card poker hand. The player with the best hand wins the pot.

There are two main versions of Texas Holdem Poker namely Limit Texas Holdem and No-Limit Texas Holdem. In No-Limit Texas Holdem the bet sizes are determined by the players, while in a Limit game the bet sizes are determined by the particular rules of that game. You can for example play a $5/$10 or $30/$60 game with the minimum amount showed first and the maximum bet amount showed last. During the game betting is limited to a total of no more than three raises per round.

This how the run of play goes in a game of Texas Holdem Poker:
- To get things started the first player to the left of the dealer will post the blind, which is half the amount of the minimum bet. The next player (going clockwise) will post the big blind, which is equal to the minimum bet. After that everyone would proceed to posting their blinds clockwise. This is to make sure that there is at least some money in the pot.
- Everyone would be dealt their pocket cards and the players would start betting in a clockwise order from the player who posted the blind. Every player can then decide whether or not to bet the minimum, fold, check or raise the minimum bet, based on how strong their pocket cards are.
- After the first round of betting has finished, the dealer would burn the top card by taking it from the deck and would deal the first three communal cards face up, also known as the flop. These cards can then be used by all the players, in conjunction with their pocket cards, and a second round of betting will follow.
- After the betting has finished another card will be burned and the 4th community card, the turn card, will be dealt. The players who are still in the game at this stage would then either bet, raise, check. The only difference is that they could take up the value of the bets to the maximum allowed on that particular table.
- When the 3rd round of betting has finished the river card, the last of the community cards, will be dealt face up. A last round of betting will be done and then the winner of the game would be the player with the best 5-card poker hand. The best hand has to be made up of a combination of the player’s pocket and the community cards.
