Land-Based Casinos keen on internet poker

It has been reported in The New York Times that casinos in America are warming up to the idea of gambling on the internet and more specifically poker. Most of them are starting to think that it can generate revenue with little influence on current business. Harrahs for example have supported the legalization for some time, but those who were against it like Wynn Resorts have now also started coming around.
The American Gaming Association is said to be working on a proposal for Congress to look at the option of legalizing some forms of online gambling. According to Sebastian Sinclair, a gaming industry analyst, a change of heart among operators like Wynn Resorts should come as no surprise if you look at the stakes involved.
Poker Analyics, a consulting firm in New York , estimates the annual revenue of Poker Stars, one of the biggest internet poker sites out of Isle of Man, to be aroun $1 billion. When confronted with a beast of this nature an industry’s first reaction is to circle the wagons and play defense. This changes over time as they get used to it and the opportunities become clearer.
It is not only the casino industry that is rethinking their opposion to online gambling, but so also Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev) according to the Times. It is believed that new legislation will however be far less liberal than the bill sponsored by Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass) and would not allow the legalization of all forms of gambling, excluding sports betting, witht he states having the power to ban some forms of gambling in their borders.
In a 2008 Reason article we looked at the futile federal crackdown on internet gambling. Then in April a possible life sentence stared Daniel Tzvetkoff in the face for helping Americans to play poker on the net. What was a serious felony back then, treated in the same light as murder, may soon become a profit generator for the likes of Wynn Resorts and Harrah’s.

Is It Possible That A Gambling Establishment Can Help A Community

by gcastle — Categories: Gambling Castle Herald — Tags: , Comments Off
A casino is often seen  as a credible option to economic problems  in parts of the country,  but what has been found that casinos that are privately owned  can be more damaging  to state funding that what the benefits could be.

If you look at the numbers that are being talked about for a casino to the east of Portland,  it shows that the casino might improve live in that area,  in quite a few ways.

The casino is expected to bring in more than $650 million of business  into a struggling local economy. Local government and schools will benefit the most in Oregon and  would be getting around $150 million  poured into their funding every year.

There would be thousands of people  who would get jobs  because of the casino.  It does sound like a good deal for the people of oregon. This is however not the whole picture  as there are millions in hidden costs associate with the casino,  which will have a large impact  on the economy  and this may exceed the income. A state analysis that real money casinos such as this can drain  the local economy  out of anything between  $30 million and $90 million  per year more than what they are getting in. Regardless of how good it sounds,  and the positive effect it can have on the people,  the impact could be a lot more damagin in the long run than could be foreseen.

Voters however will have the choice to  voice their opinion this November to decide whether or not they think the casino would help or hurt the local economy. There are just so many other gambling outlets,  that some of the local residents  would prefer not to have a casino added into the mix.

There are so many different options out there that  everything should be properly investigated and weighed and the people should be  told about the pros and cons  that might come from this.

It should however also be considered to look at online gambling as an option as this has proven to be successful in other parts of the world.
