Horse Poker
Horse poker is probably the most demanding, most interesting version of poker you can play. It is seen as an ultimate test of poker skills and not simply for those who specialise in one discipline.
In Horse poker there are a total of 5 different styles of poker played. These include the following:
-
Texas Holdem Poker
-
Omaha Eight or Better
-
Razz Poker
-
Seven Card Stud
-
Seven Card Stud Eight or Better
The game is normally played as a limit game, but the rules often change for larger tournaments. It then becomes a no-limit game when it reaches the final table.
How to play Horse Poker
The very first step in playing Horse Poker is a good understanding of how the different versions of poker work. If you can play each of them fairly successfully, you are ready to move on. If you are not there yet, you might be winning money during certain parts of the game while throwing money away in your weaker games at unnecessary times.
So first ask yourself the question: “Can I play all of these different styles without embarrassing myself?” If the answer is “no” then you have some homework. Have a look through the information we have throughout the site regarding each of these games and then start playing.
When playing Horse Poker you will play either ring games or tournaments. They essentially work the same with the only difference being when the games change.
In a ring game (cash game) you will change the type of game every time the dealer button reaches the person it started with. So for example at an 8 player table every time the dealer button comes around to player A, the game will change. In the first round it would be Texas Holdem, then Omaha Eight or Better and so on until you get to Seven Card Stud Eight or Better.
In a tournament it works slightly different. The game type will change every time the blinds go up.
Some sound advice on Horse Poker
When taking on your first Horse Poker game start at very low levels. There are two reasons:
-
If you lose, you don’t lose a lot
-
The players at lower levels are not very experienced
A very important skill, as it is in Texas Holdem, is the ability to change gears. Here the changes is just that much more severe. Not only will the pace of the game change constantly, but also the game you’re playing as well.
You will be able to play Horse Poker at all of the poker rooms on our site and we hope you enjoy the challenge!
