Omaha Eight or Better
Omaha Eight or Better is also known as Omaha High Low and it is a very popular version of Omaha Poker.
The rules for Omaha Eight or Better are mainly the same as the rules for Omaha Poker. There are however a few differences that turns this into a very into a very interesting (and sometimes a little confusing) game.
In a game of Omaha Eight or Better the pot is split into two parts namely a Hi and Lo hand. The same cards can be used in declaring the Hi and Lo hands.
There are instances where a single hand can win both the Hi and Lo halves of a pot. If there is no hand that qualifies as the Lo hand, the best Hi hand takes the whole pot.
The idea behind Eight or Better is that the hands are split into two parts. The Hi hand wins the pot in the normal way any winning poker hand would in Omaha Poker. The Lo hand gets a little interesting though.
To get a qualifying Lo hand you need to have a 5-card hand consisting of values of 8 and lower. In a qualifying Lo hand, straights and flushes don’t count. Therefore you can have both the winning straight as a Hi hand, while still having the bet Lo hand to.
